Is it just us or has January seemed to go on forever?! We’ve got to be honest, we’re quite glad to see the back of it! But of course the arrival of February means Valentine’s Day is just around the corner…
Everyone does Valentine’s Day differently. For some it’s an excuse to properly dress up and indulge in all the romantic ideals. Others prefer to acknowledge it more subtly with smaller gestures. Then there are the alternatives: Galentine’s Day (celebrating with your girlfriends), or simply using it as an opportunity to really treat yourself. So, however you like to spend the day, we’ve rounded up our pick of the best gifts and occasion-marking ideas – all local of course – for any budget or inclination.
If you’re in a spending mood…
The Lightbox museum and gallery in Woking hosts a fantastic range of exhibitions and events throughout the year, including a very popular ‘Valentine’s Food & Film Night’. This year’s film choice is the classic Casablanca, which you’ll watch following a four-course meal.
Also in central Woking, Cellar Magneval Wine Bar & Caveau is known for its sophisticated events calendar – and Valentine’s Day is no exception. Spend the evening in this cosy, candlelit setting where for £50 per couple you’ll receive bubbles on arrival followed by a sharing platter, cheese board, coffee and chocolates.
The Victoria Theatre is very much the jewel in Woking’s entertainment crown, with a packed schedule of hit shows and acts. In the run-up to Valentine’s Day (5th – 9th February) the musical interpretation of the 1990 thriller love story Ghost is showing. Why not dress up and treat yourselves to a proper night out?
We’ve had so many exciting new deliveries over the past few weeks (one of January’s perks!) and we can’t wait to share them with you. All of us here at Two Ducks are loving the beautiful new jewellery collection from Rachel Jackson London.
One of our pricier brands, these super-luxe investment pieces showcase design originality and beautiful craftsmanship. They’re definitely worth checking out if you and your other half like to really treat each other for Valentine’s Day.
If you’re looking for something a little more low-key…
Woking certainly isn’t without its choice of bars and restaurants perfect for a low-key, spontaneous meal or drink. Bacaro serves deliciously authentic Italian food – from light lunches to evening meals and tapas. A relative newbie to Woking’s food scene, Marciano Lounge has a very cool feel, decorated with eclectic artwork, mirrors and light fittings. The menu is fantastic with all-day breakfasts and plenty of vegan options. Kids are welcome too with toys and board games. Why not celebrate with a family trip?
If the theatre’s a bit of a push, you could catch a film at one of our local cinemas instead – especially with the Oscars just weeks away. Starring Emily Blunt in the iconic title role, Mary Poppins Returns is a worthy follow-up to the celebrated 1964 original and a true feel-good watch that the whole family can enjoy together.
If you like to get out with the family, there are plenty of National Trust properties around north Surrey to enjoy. One of our favourites is Leith Hill Tower – it’s only 78 steps to the top and the views are incredible. On a clear day you can see The Channel to the south, as well as The Shard! Do let us know if you have any other local day trip favourites.
We also have lots of options for mid-range gift ideas. Regular customers will know that here at Two Ducks we love a Scandi brand, and no wonder when you see these gorgeous ceramic bud vases from Sweden-based Lindform. Whether you sit one on its own, or create a coordinated little cluster, they’re such a stylish way to display single spring blooms.
If you’d like a Valentine’s Day gift that really looks the part, check out our new tableware from Peregrine Pottery. Handmade to the highest quality in Stoke-on-Trent – the heart of British pottery – they’re charmingly decorated with red painted hearts and the most appropriate of messages: I Love You. We’re stocking the full set: tea pot, mugs, milk jug and sugar bowl – perfect for enjoying a relaxing cuppa together at home!
If you’d prefer to keep things relaxed and simple…
Enjoy a quiet afternoon with a delicious mug of coffee and slice of cake in one of the many great independent cafes around. Try not-for-profit cafe The Cosy in Woking or Bem Coffee here in St John’s (just a couple of doors up from Two Ducks).
For more active couples and families, why not get out and about for a local walk or bike ride? The Baskingstoke Canal is perfect – you can stroll or ride along listening to the ducks and moorhens, admiring the colourful boats and getting a good-old blast of fresh air and exercise. Hop up at St John’s where you can warm up with a hot drink at Bem Coffee, then pop into Two Ducks for a browse!
If you head into Two Ducks you’ll find us brimming with fabulous small gifts that’ll show just how much you care without costing the earth.
Love Cocoa chocolate bars and boozy truffles come to us from James Cadbury (the great-great-great grandson of John Cadbury – so a family who know a thing or two about good chocolate!). They’ve all been tested by Claire (her verdict: ‘delicious!’) and feature flavours like salted caramel, Moroccan mint, and even gin & tonic!
Alternatively, our pamper products are a wonderful way to treat a loved one – after all, who doesn’t love a bit of indulgent ‘me’ time? Treat yourself to a relaxing bubble bath and try out our new brand, nuddy. The soaps are all made in the UK, completely plastic free and vegan friendly. The choice of scents are skin-tinglingly fresh and they’re also brilliantly packaged with tongue-in-cheek slogans – the perfect, cheeky gift!
All you’ll need to complete the scene is a glass of wine and a good book!
Last but by no means least, don’t forget that we also have a wide selection of Valentine’s Day cards too.
We hope we’ve given you some tempting new ideas when it comes to celebrating Valentine’s Day this year, but whatever you choose, have a wonderful day with your loved ones. Let us know in the comments what you get up to or decide to buy gift-wise. Plus, if you have any extra tips or ideas, please share!
